Hello Brian

I have been watching some of your videos. I especially enjoyed the one where Bhante Pannobhasa spoke about the various meditation traditions in Burma and about jhana vs. self-hypnosis. He made the salient point that it is hard to talk authoritatively about jhana because no one agrees on a single definition. I have been saying this for years!

Also thanks for the kind words regarding my book. Saying it is the best book on the topic is literally true, because I don’t believe there is another book on Cosmology from the Theravada perspective! That’s why I decided to write it in the first place.

As for certain dark actors in the world being nagas, I am uncertain. I wouldn’t rule it out completely but on the other hand I don’t see their behaviour as being like the nagas in the old texts. True, they are shape shifters and can appear in human form but they don’t seem particularly interested in the affairs of the human world. I don’t know of any traditional story about nagas impersonating humans to rule over them. They seem to get enough satisfaction in their own naga realm.

I have watched that video and found the discussion very interesting and worthwhile.

Regarding beings travelling between world-systems. There are a number of instances when devas assemble from “ten thousand world systems” to hear the Buddha discourse on the Dhamma. Although it is a little different there is the Jataka about King Nimi being taken up in the chariot of Matali and given a tour of the cosmos. A salient detail is that there seems to be some kind of time dilation in effect also.

Check out the section on the wheel-turning monarch in my book, especially the description of the wheel. Interesting to compare this to the description of “wheels within wheels” in the book of Ezekiel in the Old Testament.
